Moonlight Ball

October 7, 2000

This year’s Moonlight Ball was held at the Palace Hotel in Manchester on Saturday 7th October. The event was attended by over 200 people, many of which took up the challenge of arriving in 1970’s dress.

The evening began with a drinks reception in the hotel lounge with certain of our guests getting some very strange looks from the other hotel patrons. Maybe they were just not used to seeing a large group of people decked out in Afro wigs and platform shoes on a mission to have a good time.

The meal followed the reception down in the main ballroom and was rapidly consumed by all as was the free bottles of wine placed on the tables. The evening progressed and at 10 o’clock the casino, fortune teller and surf simulator all opened for business. Also at this stage our guest band for the evening ‘Abba Inferno’ took to the stage to perform their first of two sets throughout the evening.

‘Abba Infernos’ first set over it was time for the prizes to be awarded for all the brave souls who had turned up for the evening in 1970’s gear. The competition was hard fought but was decided on audience opinion and the victors returned to their tables clutching their bottles of champagne to add to the growing lake of alcohol that was being consumed by all. The evening wore on, the alcohol kept flowing and the times being recorded on the surf simulator fell (surely nothing to do with people’s balance deteriorating as the night wore on!!). Abba Inferno returned to the stage to entertain us once more before finishing their stint for the night to a blast of indoor fireworks from the front of the stage.

The final ‘official’ entertainment for the night came in the form of the DJ playing all our favourite 70’s tunes accompanied by a troop of dancing girls on the stage. As they and by now a great number of the students danced the night away the DJ let off a burst of flutterfetti cannons to cover the dancefloor in a shower of colour.

The night drew to a close at 2am as the DJ signed off for the night and people started to drift off leaving behind the diehard few who continued up to the residents bar before crawling off to their room in the small hours of the morning.

Overall I think we can say the night was a success with everyone enjoying themselves and if you attended thank you for supporting your society, I hopr you enjoyed yourself and look forward to seeing you at future events. If you didn’t turn up, why not? I hope someone has told you what you have missed and we will see you at our next social event.

Keep your eye out those of you that attended for a future issue of Double Entry which will contain a lot more photos from the night so if your embarrassing picture hasn’t appeared hear you may not be safe yet!!!!
