Summer Pub Crawl
July 19, 2001
Well we all survived (just about!) this summer’s MCASS pub crawl around the bars of Manchester. The crawl was held on Thursday 19th July starting off in ‘All Bar One’ on King Street where everyone was greeted with their first free beer of the evening.
To make the night more entertaining we decided that it was going to be a ‘three-legged’ pub crawl. Most people at first were not too keen on the idea but Kirstie had come armed with a roll of packing tape and no one was going to escape. So after a few drinks all tied to our ‘partner’ for the evening we ventured onto the streets of Manchester to get to the next stop ‘The Square Albert’. I don’t know why whether it is just a natural thing in Manchester but nobody seemed to even notice that 30 people were walking across town tied to each other!
As soon as we reached ‘The Square Albert’, which for some reason seemed to take longer than usual, most people immediately took off their leg bindings but a few select, some would say mad, people decided it would be fun to see who could stay strapped together the longest. Yes I was one of these mad people but I thought why not if the committee members don’t show willing how can we expect you lot to!
Anyway after we had downed yet more free beer Kirstie sprang into action again with the tape before moving onto ‘The Old Monk.’ On the way to this pub some people had now really got the hang of this ‘three-legged’ idea and were actually running down the street.
It was about this time that a few problems occurred to those that had decided to stay ‘attached’ for as long as possible, the main one being that after drinking all this beer nature soon takes its course and certain bodily functions need to be carried out, which believe me sure raises an eyebrow or two when you have to do it in tandem!
It was now time to move onto the next bar ‘Square’ and people were now hoping Kirstie’s roll of tape would have run out by now but it seemed to have everlasting properties and continued for a long time yet. The effects of the alcohol seemed to be having an effect on peoples walking capabilities with the ‘pairs’ now not walking in quite a straight a line as they were earlier in the evening.
Once in Squares the merriment continued before it was decided that a group photo was needed just to remind everyone just who was there on the night. So the most capable looking bar man was selected and entrusted with the task of chief photographer and came out with the picture below.
It was shortly after this photo was taken that the night’s competition winners could be announced when the only other remaining ‘pair’ conceded and cut their bindings complaining they were now cutting into their legs and stopping circulation! This was soon followed by the ‘winning’ pair releasing themselves who although they wouldn’t admit were also now in some pain.
We eventually moved over the road to our final bar ‘Bar 38′ and sat outside ’til the early hours contemplating what the rest of Manchester must have thought seeing 30 mad drunken accountants staggering through Manchester desperately trying to keep their balance while being tied to someone else! Who said accountants are boring???
If you like the sound of this night keep listening for news of more events being organised as we speak and don’t forget we have our ‘Moonlight Ball’ in October which is always a very good night details on this will be released very shortly.
Thanks again to all of you who turned up to this event and continued to help make another successful MCASS event.
